…Also, we have HAIL. So many people in Hawaii have never seen snow in their lives, let alone hail. But now lots have seen hail. I can’t believe it, we had hail the size of golfballs. And this morning, after I was very surprised and kind of in disbelief about the hail story my friend told me I got an email from Robin Lloyd, our reservationist, that a tornado demolished a nextdoor house in Lanikai! In 27 years I’d never …

What a night! I was lucky to be an extra for filming of Hawaii Five-O episode 216! It was a dream come true and I hit the newbie jackpot since all the principal characters were in the scene. Not only that, the scene was a black-tie affair. Our wardrobe was described as “think red carpet”. Imagine Alex O’Loughlin, Scott Caan and Daniel Dae Kim all cleaned up and in tuxedos! And Grace Park in her sleek ivory colored sequined gown …

I had my first tamale near Chapman University outside of LA (inside? Not sure, LA seems to include everything…). While waiting for my younger sister to finish her tour of the school, my dad and I pulled up to a convenience store where a sign was posted on the door “WORLD’S BEST TAMALES”. Dad was thrilled, he thought “How did we get so lucky?” We’d both never had tamales. So Dad ordered like a dozen. I thought they were terrible …

The legend of beautiful kupe’e begins like this… Long ago Kupe’e lived on rocks during the day. They were white and black, resulting from too little or too much sunlight. They were small, like the pipi’i, and lacked beauty. They were shunned by humans as ugly and without taste. The early days, the sun’s travel was erratic, sometimes fast, sometimes slow. People could not depend on it. Cooking was very difficult and at times the night lasted for a very …

Birthday at Waimanalo Hale

http://yourhawaiivacationrentalnews.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/rabbit-island-moonrise-150x150.jpg

I was lucky enough to have my birthday at Waimanalo Hale this year! And it was a SURPRISE! Boy was I surprised. You would think I’d have seen my friends cars parked on the opposite side of the street from the house, but I didn’t. I must have been fiddling with an iPod in the car or something. What a fantastic HOUSE! It was a ton of fun playing charades and struggling through two long games of mafia (everyone forgot …

Civil Unions legalized in Hawaii! Beginning 1/1/12

http://yourhawaiivacationrentalnews.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/Sandbar_3-150x150.jpg

Same-sex marriage becomes legal in Hawaii starting January 1st, 2012! I remembered this while at a coffee shop the other day, overhearing the gay couple next to me discussing their big day with their wedding planner. Sounded like fun to me. Some people get married on our Kaneohe Bay Sandbar, ankle (or sometimes more…) deep in the water.

75 Degrees? Everyone, get out your jackets and long underwear!

http://yourhawaiivacationrentalnews.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/slippers-150x150.jpg

I noticed it’s freezing these days. Supposedly it is only 75 degrees. In Hawaii, however, that is when you bust out your sweaters, jackets, blankets at work, and think about wearing some socks and shoes instead of your favorite – and one and only pair – of slippahs. It sure is tough!

Bored of Glaucus Atlanticus

After our super cool find on Saturday of a Glaucus Atlanticus on the beach, I went back for more yesterday. Luckily it was a gorgeous windy day and it was extremely low tied. I only walked a few minutes until I found another Glaucus Atlanticus (otherwise known as a “Sea Swallow” according to Wikipedia – though I’m gonna have to say Glaucus Atlanticus is a way more cool name). I was thrilled. I carried it around and tried to revive …

Cool…things found on Kailua beach!

http://yourhawaiivacationrentalnews.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/Glaucus-atlanticus-150x150.jpg

My younger sister is learning how to kitesurf on Kailua beach – along with a ton of other people (now is the time to learn – kitesurfing lessons are given every day that there is adequate wind on the beach! Let us know if you want us to hook you up with an instructor! We know several personally). On Saturday I started on a walk down the beach and saw her running to me with her kite gear on, carrying …

Michelle Obama visits Ma’o Farm in Waianae during APEC Hawaii Trip

Click below to see full article on KHON and a video of Michelle Obama at the discussion following her tour. Waianae is getting great attention in the news for their new programs – Ma’o Farms being an intern program, where college students learn leadership and business skills, and also trying to involve high school students. The high school has budding fashion and graphic design programs. What a mix! On my way to Town Restaurant tonight to try Ma’o Farms fresh …
